The NC Foreclosure Prevention Fund, offered by the NC Housing Finance Agency using funds from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Hardest Hit Fund, helps pay the mortgage for North Carolina homeowners who are struggling due to job loss or temporary unemployment, reduction of income or temporary financial hardship such as illness, divorce or death of a spouse or a natural disaster. The Fund also provides counseling and assistance to military veterans who are transitioning to civilian jobs.

Please note that if you are temporarily unemployed as a result of Hurricane Florence, you may be eligible for mortgage payment assistance from the Fund.

The Fund also assists homeowners who have returned to work or secured a fixed income after an eligible hardship but are earning less and are unable to afford their mortgage. Assistance is offered through participating HUD-approved counseling agencies statewide.

You do not need to be behind on your mortgage payments to seek help. To learn more, find a counseling agency in your area or apply online, go to or call 1-888-623-8631.

If you are not eligible for assistance from the Fund but have received a 45-day pre-foreclosure notice, the State Home Foreclosure Prevention Project offers free help, including housing counseling, access to legal services if your income is low and assistance working with your servicer.
